Tracking America's Electronic Waste
I reported and produced this story with co-producer Katie Campbell as part of EarthFix, an environment-focused Regional Journalism Center based in the Pacific Northwest and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The video, produced for PBS NewsHour in addition to Northwest public media partners, was one piece of an expansive reporting project that included local and international radio stories, online multimedia content and a long-form written story with additional reporting. Katie and I led reporting, production and writing for all of these elements with help from a broad team of journalists and editors that included data visualists, web designers, reporters in Hong Kong and other video editors. It was nominated for best explanatory reporting at the Online News Association's 2016 awards. The story also led to the investigations in Hong Kong and Washington State into e-waste recycling practices, and led to prison convictions for two Seattle-based business owners charged with defrauding recycling customers.
